November 11, 2018 | While completing her GIP position at Cabrillo National Monument (California), McKenna Pace honed her native species identification skills and also increased her knowledge of education techniques through the development and implementation of the Science Explorer’s Club – a volunteer-led program that introduces visitors to the science of the Monument.

On October 1, 35 Stewards VISTA Members and five staff members convened at the Capital Retreat Center in Waynesboro PA for a three day training. This training is an opportunity to bring members together to not only learn valuable skills that will assist them during their year of service, but it also allows them the opportunity to network with others that are serving across the country.

November 11, 2018 | Sophie Trowbridge recently completed a year-long internship as the Outreach Coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s New York Field Office, where she worked on a variety of projects focused on threatened or endangered species recovery, habitat restoration, and waterway accessibility and aquatic health for a variety of at risk species within New York State.

November 11, 2018 | Second term AmeriCorps VISTA, David Kilroy, received the honor of helping cut the ceremonial ribbon to open the Kricker Innovation Hub at the Shawnee State University. The Innovation Hub will allow substantial growth to the city of Portsmouth and the surrounding community in the areas of technological literacy, innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship.

November 11, 2018 | Jesse Furr isn’t messing around when it comes to talking about Rivers & Birds, his AmeriCorps VISTA host site in New Mexico. This small but mighty organization, with the help of a Stewards VISTA project, has strengthened and expanded its educational programming for years, but hopes to expand knowledge of their work in the local community. 

November 11, 2018 | September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance is the culmination of efforts, originally launched in 2002 that promotes community service on 9/11 as an annual and forward-looking tribute to the 9/11 victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the attacks.

October 9, 2018 | 2018 marked the first year of both the Kids in Kayaks and the AmeriCorps Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) programs at Fort Monroe National Monument (Virginia). CVA Chris Martin was tasked with improving a youth summer program from the year before using the park supply of kayaks to enhance the student experience.

September 22, 2018 | CVA member Rachele Funk was able to meet Secretary Zinke for a National Public Lands Day (NPLD) event on September 22, 2018. Rachele was able to speak with Secretary Zinke directly about one of their volunteer groups.
